Last year, in November, the integration of The Graph with Cosmos Hub has begun. Figment, which is a member of the Cosmos ecosystem, has taken the initiative to implement The Graph in Cosmos. Just this week, beta integration was completed and now Cosmos developers can use subgraph’s support to perform fast and reliable operations with data from the blockchain. As an indexer of The Graph, we consider this a significant event both for The Graph and for the industry, so in this article we’ll tell about it.

About The Graph

First, we briefly remind you what The Graph is. The Graph is a protocol for indexing data requests for networks. The Graph is used to collect, process and store data from various blockchain applications to facilitate information search, as well as to improve the performance of decentralized applications. Developers can create and publish various APIs, which are called subgraphs, and execute queries via GraphQL. The Graph supports indexing of data from more than 30 different networks, and subgraphs are used by tens of thousands of developers for such well-known applications as Uniswap, Synthetix, KnownOrigin, Art Blocks, Gnosis, Balancer, Livepeer, DAOstack, Audius, Decentraland and many others. Read more about The Graph technologies in our previous article here.

About Cosmos

Cosmos is a network of independent but compatible blockchains, it is also called the Internet of blockchains. Cosmos uses Tendermint BFT (PoS-based consensus algorithm), CosmosSDK (modular platform for developers), and the Inter-Blockchain Communication Interface (IBC), which allows seamlessly transfer tokens and data between blockchains. Cosmos Hub is the first blockchain in Cosmos and is the center of the Cosmos SDK ecosystem. It was intended to serve as a bridge between autonomous blockchains generated on the network.

Cosmos was able to assemble disparate blockchains in one system, preserving their independence, but allowing them to interact with each other. The Cosmos ecosystem is an ever–growing community of projects and applications that are aimed at a decentralized future.

About Figment

Figment is one of the world’s largest providers of blockchain infrastructure and services. Figment is helping to introduce and develop the next generation of the Internet Web3.0. Figment helps investors to stake tokens, and applications Hubble and Prime and educational program Learn allow token holders to analyze, track and make informed decisions. Their DataHub platform also makes it easier for developers to launch applications and manage smart contracts.

About the integration

Figment and The Graph are aimed at creating Web3.0 and agree that the future of the Internet is a multi–chain. Therefore, Figment mediated the integration of The Graph into the Cosmos ecosystem. This was announced back in November 2021, and beta integration was completed this month. Now the Cosmos ecosystem data can be indexed using subgraphs.

Why was the Graph chosen? Because it has a great importance for the development of Web3.0.

What is it for? Subgraphs simplify the process of creating applications on Cosmos Hub. The Graph allows to access blockchain data without resorting to expensive data indexing services that are used on Web2.0 platforms. Developers can now easily query data using subgraphs and GraphQL language. They can choose what type of data they index, set their own conditions by creating their own subgraphs or open APIs.

“We are going towards a future where The Graph is a key infrastructure in the Cosmos ecosystem. Cosmos Hub’s integration is just the beginning. Same way developers in Cosmos could leverage Tendermint & Cosmos SDK to build their decentralized applications, IBC to access the Cosmos interoperability, they will now be able to leverage The Graph to query blockchain data. The Graph indexing in Cosmos will close the loop of everything that devs need to build their dapps the easiest way possible.” — Joseph Al-Chami, Product Manager

During Graph Hack 2022, which took place in early June, innovations that were made possible thanks to The Graph have already been demonstrated.

“The Graph provides us with a scalable solution for querying and ingesting on-chain data. Using The Graph, we can develop new tools to analyze protocols in detail with a neutral foundation and greater flexibility. Figment’s integration of The Graph with the Cosmos hub means that we can support protocols across the Cosmos ecosystem to the same standard as EVM-based protocols.” — Ken Yip, Messari Principal Product Manager

The Graph makes the Cosmos infrastructure more accessible, now more developers, companies and individuals can participate in the Cosmos ecosystem, create products, and collaborate with each other. This integration opens a new level in the blockchain, which in general brings us closer to a decentralized future, and to Web3.0.
